Jin Sakai

Lord Jin Sakai is the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima. Jin grew up on Tsushima Island. Growing up in the ruling class of samurai, he was raised in a strict, disciplined environment, trained by his father and uncle to become a samurai. When his father died while Jin was still an adolescent, his uncle, Lord Shimura, jito (the title for a feudal land steward appointed by the shogunate of Japan) of Tsushima island, took Jin as his ward and continued to train Jin in the way of the samurai. When the Mongols invaded Tsushima in 1274, they killed a majority of the samurai, killed or enslaved many civilians and devastated towns. Since Jin was one of the few survivors of that battle, he considers it his duty to protect the island and his people at any cost. A samurai is supposed follow Bushido (a code of morals and ideals, similar to a Western knight's chivalry), but the Mongol leader, Khotun Khan (having learned all about the samurai before and during his invasion) had used this to his advantage, turning the samurai's tactics against them. Since the Mongols greatly outnumber the inhabitants of the island, Jin must find new ways to defeat them. He can choose to use his expert swordsmanship as a samurai or learn new tactics of the Ghost (which violate the Bushido code of honor). Players can make the decision to have Jin become a larger-than-life, legendary warrior.
