Kikyo

A miko from the feudal era. Kikyo was born with strong spiritual powers, which made her an extremely good candidate for guarding and maintaining the purity of the shikon jewel, a legendary magical item sought by demons for increasing their powers. 50 years before the start of the series, Kikyo was entrusted with protecting the jewel from evil, and had to regularly fight off demons and such. However, when Inuyasha, a half-demon, sought the jewel, she spared him, and later the two fell in love. Unfortunately, they came to believe that each had betrayed the other, and in a fierce fight she had Inuyasha sealed away to a tree. Kikyo succumbed to her injuries, and her body was burned with the jewel. In the present however, her reincarnation Kagome comes across Inuyasha and accidentally frees him due to her latent spiritual powers, and thus their journey begins.
