Kiyo Takamine is an ill-tempered and introverted high school student that has his life turned upside down when his concerned father - who studies abroad in Britain - sends Kiyo a young Mamodo boy known as Zatch Bell for his birthday, hoping that Zatch will help Kiyo return to his school and make friends while also hoping that Kiyo might help restore Zatch's memory. Although the two butt heads at first, they grow to genuinely care about one another through their adventures. Through Zatch, Kiyo becomes an outstanding student and popular at his school. Kiyo also commits to his goal of helping Zatch both recover his memory and become the King of the Mamodo World. Kiyo's sharp mind make him a formidable tactician and he has narrowly saved Zatch's book from being burned (an act that would eliminate him as a candidate for Mamodo King and send him back to his world earlier) on multiple occasions. Although Zatch was previously considered one of the weakest Mamodo in the competition to become King, his strong, brotherly bond with Kiyo has strengthened him in ways he was previously unaware of.
